Biography

Lisa Amowitz graduated Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, 1980
with a BFA in Illustration. With the original intent of pursuing an
illustration career, she found herself propelled by the advancing
digital revolution into a career as a freelance graphic designer. This
ultimately led to a position teaching computer graphics. Currently,
Ms. Amowitz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and
Music at Bronx Community College.
While heavily involved in graphic arts and digital design, Ms. Amowitz
continued to pursue studies in traditional Fine Arts. In 1998 she
received a Masters Degree in Painting from Lehman College and was
awarded a BRIO Award for Painting from the Bronx Council on the Arts.
This exhibition marks her first solo showing of works featuring both
traditional and digital media.
Ms. Amowitz is a member of the Riverdale Art Association and has
exhibited her work in their last two group exhibitions. She resides in
Riverdale with her husband and two children.

Statement

Realms: A Journey
I have long been fascinated with natural forms. My past work has
revealed unexpected inner worlds one finds when looking very closely
at flowers, leaves, underbrush and fruits. Exploring these micro
"realms" I had the sensation of uncovering hidden aspects of myself.
In the project "Realms:A Journey", a conscious effort has been made to
develop a personal iconography around the natural forms recurrent in
my work. The project has been organized to encompass certain areas of
the psyche. Currently completed are Communication, Body, Overload and
Spirit. In progress are Nurture, Mind, Unknown, Fear and Beauty.
The issues and emotions of these "realms" are expressed through
various means. While the natural iconography rendered in traditional
media (water-based art crayons) forms the body of the works, a new
digital and typographic dimension is now present. It was necessary, I
felt to more intricately explore the conceptual parameters of this
project.
