Biography GINGER NIELSON ~ CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATION Ginger Nielson was born in New York state, and grew up in New Jersey, Indiana and Illinois. She began her creative career quite early when she used her sister's dusting powder to create a "misty land of fog" in the upstairs hallway. It was strongly suggested that she confine her flights of fancy to paper and crayons. After graduating from Rugters University with a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Education she taught first grade, art and remedial reading before changing directions and spending the next few years as a travel agent. But in each career she always found herself using her art and illustrations as a tool. Newly transplanted to New England with her husband, she is now illustrating full time.
Her work always begins as a sketch....in fact a LOT of sketches. When a character emerges it is given a life of its own. Maybe it gets a real name, maybe it finds just the right story to live within, maybe it will be in a book that you will read someday.
Sketches might become watercolors, colored pencil renderings, acrylic paintings, or they might go right into the computer...either way the final paintings are digital creations. The mixture of traditional media and digital painting is what gives life to Ginger's characters.

Statement To be an artist or illustrator is to live in a world where dreams come true. There is a dragon in my basement and a magic wand on my desk.... almost everything else is fairly normal. | | |
